Samantha Fox: Touch Me
For me it is probably one of the most hilarious memories ever - that during my youth there was two female stars who hit it big (at least in Europe) and their "starlight" reached even me and my music player. Their success was not based on musical talent however, they were based on thin voices and considerably large breasts. Yes, they were/are the sex bomb stars of the 80s: Samantha Fox and Sabrina, who got famous mainly for their body and provocative recordings, videos and well, poses. I think Samantha still travels and performs to some unknown backward locations, but that's about it - their stars didn't stay up very long.
Anyways, since I am a gay man and have always admired strong women (like all gay men do, we just love divas) these two ladies were a pretty interesting choice! I think they were mostly adored by straight guys who never get over the breast feeding phase. Of course these women were certainly brave in their own way - placing themselves as sex objects and using their body to sell themselves. Madonna too has been accused of doing that, but she never did it the way these women did. Sam and Sab were playthings, they were like Playboy girls and I think they might have even posed for the magazine - at least Sam got her big break through a nude spread in a British tabloid. A notable thing in Sabrina's video is that she it even includes a nipple shot - a remarkable thing considering it was aired in Europe without much of a fuss, but then again I guess Europe has always been more free when it comes to nudity. I didn't watch these videos or really care about them to pay great attention at the time so you can imagine my expression when I looked these up 20 years later! Uhm... Interesting viewing? Anyways, classic 80s!
Despite the origins and style of these two singers, I wouldn't say I'm embarrassed to have listened to them - especially Samantha Fox. She did obtain a bit of a singing voice (which came through better on her second album which contains the songs I like more). But I will posts those later her (sorry, haha). Actually, I got familiar with Sam Fox by joining a music club: which basically meant, I had to choose five cassettes in order to join & there weren't very many to choose from so Sam along with Madonna got on my list. I didn't have much of a clue (if any) what I was ordering but ended up liking the music, if not loving it. Anyways, since these two women were so alike in many ways, I thought I'd present them side by side.
I think I may even have had their posters on my wall back then - how scary!! But oh well, that was about to change...
I call them the cleavage girls, here they are: Sam and Sab, let's give them a go. =)
